Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a “Hackathon”
A hackathon is an event where a group of people come together and ‘hack’ the internet. For International Women’s Day, this national event aims to increase the amount of information on Canadian women in theatre online. For three hours, theatre companies and practitioners will join forces to add online pages to wiki sites on diverse women in the Canadian theatre industry.
How is it done?

Why do this now?
International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women’s achievements throughout the world and recognize the systemic barriers that present challenges in accomplishing their goals and obtaining and maintaining leadership roles.
A quick search of Canadian women in theatre online demonstrates their dire absence in the virtual world. Less sites and wikipages means less easily accessible information, less notoriety and less research available, which may result in less support, resources and funding. Emerging artists may have more difficulty locating and tracing the history of strong and accomplished women in the Canadian performance industry, making it hard to find a sense of belonging.
How will it improve equity in theatre?
Simple. With more online pages comes more easily accessible information, a larger virtual presence and increased visibility. Gender inequity in the arts is not simply a result of women producing less or poorer quality work. On the contrary, diverse women are continually creating dynamic, exciting and challenging works of art, but with less resources, visibility and support their work often remains invisible. We can help to change this by ensuring their creative contributions get the notoriety, press and visibility they deserve!
Why do you recommend Theatrewiki.ca?
We highly suggest you visit and add pages to Theatrewiki.ca! This site is incredibly valuable to theatre practitioners in Canada because:
It is Canadian focused
It is easier for artist with less experience to gain inclusion
It can be used as a linkable source when Wikipedia pages are being built
*If you do choose to add a page to another Wiki-Site Theatrewiki.ca may be used as a resource for finding and citing information on Canadian theatre practitioners!**
